Digital Rights and Responsibilities are the "privileges and freedom extended to all digital technology users, and the behavioral expectations that come with them" (Ribble and Bailey, 2007). As with every right there is also a responsibility. We may have the right to freedom of speech, but in turn it is ours to use this responsibly
3 Society
We need to understand that although we have certain inherent rights, we also have inherent responsibilities within the context of society.
The right to Internet access may be seen as an inherent right, but we have a responsibility toward society to use it responsibly. The way in which we use the Internet should not affect society negatively. At the same token we should use it to better improve society. This could be to create change, to improve on current conditions, or to ensure at least that our actions in no way make things worse.
4 Business
. One of the core elements of the Kings Report on Corporate Governance is transparency. As such companies have a responsibility to be transparent in their conduct and reporting. This transparency applies to how companies market themselves and their products.
With the increased reliance on the digital world companies are placing a greater emphasis on their e-business strategies, including their e-marketing strategies. As such companies have a right to promote themselves within the digital society, but they also have a responsibility toward the consumers and society as a whole. This means they have a responsibility to be clear about product benefits and features, as well as the limitations of the products. They can promote the company but also need to be clear about their business practices. In the example listed previously the company had a responsibility toward the people in India by not using such factories. Although that was a fictitious company, there are many famous brands that in the past have been guilty of such conduct
5 Education
We have a right to education, it is a basic human right, and with this right we have a right to access information to support our educational needs. Our responsibility comes in the ethical and legal use of such information.
Time and again you will hear about plagiarism and that it is illegal. What most students don’t realise is that plagiarism is a very serious offence and has consequences For example a law student found guilty of plagiarism may find themselves disbarred or not allowed to become a lawyer, journalists and authors found guilty may not only face financial costs but also prison time, students wishing to study further or at another institute may find that they cannot do so if their academic records reflect a guilty status. In some cases people have been stripped of their qualification.
As digital citizens we have to ensure that our use of such information that is required for the purpose of education be used in an ethical and professional manner.
Creative Commons
Creative Commons is a non-profit organisation based in California. The organisation is focused on increase the range of creative work available for other people to build upon in a legal manner and to share further. The organisation created copyright-licenses, called Creative Commons Licenses, free of charge to the general public.
These licenses allow the creators of work to communicate which rights they reserve and which rights they waiver for the benefit of the greater community. Essentially allowing users to take the creation and to build upon it, enhance it, alter it or just share it without having to negotiate with the original creator
6 Individual
As an individual you have rights and responsibilities toward yourself. It is your right to access the Internet, to say what you wish and find information that you seek. However, it is also your responsibility to search for information that is not harmful to yourself, to say things that will not harm you or your reputation, to share things with others that will not hurt you in any form or manner. It sounds so logical that you would not do so, however, so many do this without thought.
